This is a very interesting new style of chisel that marries the great Japanese forged and laminated chisel tradition to new materials. These chisels are designed for cutting through modern tough materials such as plywood, through glue joints, and through knots. The edge is made of a special alloy high carbon steel that is similar to High Speed Steel. This is laminated to a soft steel back. Because of the toughness of the alloy steel edge, the blade can be hardened to 68rc, which is considerably harder than our other, traditional Japanese chisels (64rc) and much harder than western style chisels (62rc). The soft steel back prevents cracking and so you end up with a tough chisel that can take a lot of abuse. This whole process is an attempt to combine the hardness of edge, which makes the Japanese chisel so great on soft and abrasive woods, with the toughness needed for Western woods such as Oak and Maple and modern composites in which glue lines really wear at an edge. The handle is of Japanese Red Oak, single hollow backs, hand forged hoops. Overall length 8-3/4, 2-1/4" handle.
