Just because you dont think of yourself as a wood turner doesnt mean you wont end up doing a lot of turning. We constantly get requests from customers who primarily build furniture, but find themselves doing a project with a lot of turning. We asked Mario Rodriguez what tools we should recommend and he suggested the following:
A very basic, four-piece set: 1-1/4" roughing gouge, 1/2" roughing gouge, 1/8" parting tool and a 1" skew chisel. :
The five-piece set adds another small spindle gouge for details.
Finally, for speed and efficiency, the six-piece set adds the Rodriguez 3-in-1 gouge.
The tools are really meant for spindle turning, which is the kind of turning work furniture makers find themselves doing. Mario selected these tools for their size and heft. This means they will cut more easily and smoothly, even if you dont have the skill of constant practice, and you will be able to produce professional quality work with a minimum of effort. The cost reflects the sheer size and weight of the tools.
Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid - a real aid in turning. All the tools are shipped sharp and ready to use, although we fully expect many of you to customize the grinds to your particular working methods.
