Designed by the noted British turner Reg Sherwin, and highly recommended by Reg Stack, these roughing gouges are gouges are machined from solid HSS rods and have the heft needed for doing rapid controlled turning. Unlike regular machined gouges, these tools have a deep flute like forged roughing gouges. They are perfect for handling smaller work that the big gouges would overwhelm.

Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid - a real aid in turning. All the tools are shipped sharp and ready to use, although we fully expect many of you to customize the grinds to your particular working methods.

Solid Bar Roughing Out Gouges
By: John Kartchner (May, 2019)
I have been using both 3/8" and the 1/2" gouges for over ten years. They hold an edge well and are absolutely unequaled in their versatility as roughing out gouges. You will discover that they not only rough out appropriately sized projects, but that they can be used extensively for very smooth shaping on very hard woods. Sharpen them to your preferred angle, keep them sharp, and you will become very loyal to them. (And you never have to worry about the shaft bending or breaking.
I own this product.
Nice tool but edge not close to ready (1/2" gouge)
By: Jim K. (Dec, 2017)
Nice tool. The edge however was very rough ground at about a 33 degree angle with a very irregular edge, not straight but about as rough as can be. Having said that, about 3 minutes on the grinder got it fixed up right. Don't let this dissuade you at all, just stating this because reality doesn't meet the description above about being shipped sharp and ready to use.
I own this product.
woodturner who volunteers at 3 highschools
By: jeff marshall (Aug, 2016)
I have used an Ashley iles 5/8 shank roughing gouge for pens with the high schools because they can do the whole pen with one tool that is easy to explain and sharpen.
I own this product.
