Kell Honing guides are the best sharpening fixture we know of. They clamp firmly against the sides of the tool, and the simple design of the fixture allows it to work with an enormous range of shapes and sizes.

Unlike top-to-bottom clamps, Kell clamps eliminate the hassle of getting the blade square to the jig. Two plastic washers even out any irregularity in the iron so that the clamp holds the tool far tighter than any other honing guide on the market. To determine the honing angle, just measure the amount of extension from the jig. It's really reassuring to work with a tool that is so solid in the hand and so positive in its clamping action without lots of fiddly adjustments that can get clogged and slip.

The jig works perfectly from both Western and Japanese style chisels and plane blades. Spokeshave blades and other short blades are no problem. We use them in the Gramercy workshop as a fixture for shaping and polishing machine parts because they're clamping mechanism is so secure and works with a wide range of shapes. We consider these honing guides to be the best on the market, and when you feel the the quality of the Kell guide in your hand, you will too.

Kell Honing Guides are available in two sizes, both expertly machined from solid brass and stainless steel. The Small Guide fits blades up to 1" wide. The Large Guide can clamps blades up to 2 5/8" making it great for sharpening plane irons. The larger diameter wheels(1.56"/40mm) make tuning the bevel angle slightly easier over previous models, but require a little more extension of the tool.

Richard Kell Honing Guides are Made in England.

The Best Guide for Plane Irons
By: Derek Plattsmier (Jan, 2019)
I bought the large honing guide over a year ago & it has been the absolute best plane iron sharpening guide I've tried. I've tried & own the Veritas kit with the large honing guide , I've tried the Eclipse style ones and while they may all three work - the Kell guides are perfect for rolling on a diamond surface. You don't feel you're "wasting" your expensive diamond plate by rolling a metal or brass wheel over the diamond surface. One thing if you're using diamond plates (either 6x2 or 8x3) you'll probably want to recess the plates into a wooden holder so the surface of the plates are pretty flush with the wooden plate holder. this allows the larger wheel span of this guide to roll over every surface of your diamond plates without having to "straddle the center of every plate" with the guide. the nylon wheels are excellent & the brass & steel guide is accurate, reliable & a pleasure to use & this functional work of art is still performing at as high a level as it was when I 1st bought it from TFWW well over a year ago.
I own this product.

i've used the Kell guides for a number of years now, have given them as presents and they are hands down my favorite tool sharpening guide. And they are beautiful to look at.

Excellent For Mortise Chisels
By: Adam Welker (Jun, 2013)
I recently purchased the small guide after reading that it worked well on smaller tools and especially mortise chisels. It locks tight with only finger pressure and is easy to set with a wooden jig for projection. It has made sharpening my mortise chisels and dovetail chisels a ton easier than it was with a regular side clamping, "eclipse style", guide. I couldn't get five stars to register on the rating scale but it is definitely a five star tool. I plan on purchasing the large one soon.
I own this product.
