Give a person a fish and they can eat for a day. Teach them how to carve, and they can carve any kind of fish! For woodcarving beginners, lessons are a great way to learn the craft of carving efficiently. For advanced carvers, studying with a master carver like Chris Pye can propel your work to a higher level.
Different teachers approach teaching differently. Click on the links in the picture viewer for some sample videos of Chris in action and to get a sense of his methodology. The school contains hundreds of videos, all of professional quality, on all of aspects of carving.
Buying a present for a carver can be very problematic. Tools? Novices might need different ones than what you give and the advanced carvers probably have everything they need except for some oddment you probably don't even know about. But classes are different. Give a beginner a chance to spend 3 or 6 months watching and re-watching all sorts of instructions, and you'll be giving them a coherent foundation that they won't get from randomly surfing the web. Chris's encouraging style will put them in a position to have successful results early on.
Advanced carvers can also benefit. Many advanced carvers wouldn't feel personally justified in signing up for lessons, but the mix of advanced topics here is truly excellent. Here's a chance to pick and choose from hundreds of lessons over a few months, which will round out the training of any good carver who strives to go further.
Chris's Woodcarving TV is sold by subscription. A 3 or 6 month subscription is a great gift for woodcarver - at all levels. What sets apart the TV School from DVDs is a special feature: you get to ask Chris for personalized advice about carving! Once you purchase a subscription, Chris will email you or your giftee an enrollment number and a printable gift certificate. THe subscription can begin anytime thereafter.
