The TSC 55 sets a new standard in plunge cutting track saws by cutting the cord. An efficient constant-speed EC-TEC brush-less motor run by twin 18v Lithium Ion Batteries delivers the power to slice hardwood, laminate, ply, and even non-ferrous metals like aluminum. But the best thing is that the saw builds upon (and works with all the accessories of) the amazing TS 55 and the Festool Precision guide rail system. As Festool continues to build its cordless arsenal, they're quickly making us question the primacy of corded tools, and simultaneously expanding the types of jobs, and projects you can tackle.
Power and battery life are major concerns with any cordless tool - and the TSC 55 addresses those issues with an efficient but powerful brushless EC-TEC motor, that maintains a constant speed under load. The TSC 55 Plus and TSC 55 Plus Set come with a robust pair of 18v batteries and 2 chargers - but the saw will also run on any combination of 15v or 18v Festool "slide in" battery - and can even operate on a single 15 or 18 volt battery if need be. Battery charge can be checked at a glance with a quick squeeze o the trigger to illuminate the battery charge lights right next to the battery mounts. Festool promises over 300 linear feet of sawing in 3/4 inch ply on a single charge. That's 40 sheets of ply - sliced in half... the long way.
Just like the TS 55 and TS 75 Track saws, the reason to buy a Festool TSC 55 is precision, and quality of cut. The TSC 55 works with all the same accessories, guide rails, blades and disposables as the TS 55 so there's no need to double dip if you already own a Festool Track Saw. As on the TS 55/75 tear out is eliminated on both sides of the blade by the replaceable splinter guard (same as the TS 55 and 75), and by the cut-in-place splinter guard on the Festool precision guide rail. For precise stop cuts the splinter guard can be replaced with a clear viewing window - just like on the corded TS55/75.
Plunge depth is adjustable, and repeatable, and Festool (thankfully) includes an Imperial measurement sticker that can be applied over the metric markings on the depth stop. A spring loaded riving blade follows the cut to prevent kick-back and helps locate the saw in an existing kerf when extending a cut.
One of the TSC's major differences from other Festool Track saws is the dust collection which is handled by a detachable (and included) dust collecting bag which works amazingly well. How well? To put a number on it Festool rates the TSC 55 with the dust bag at 90% dust extraction that's vs 96% extraction when using a Vac with a regular TS 55. The Dust Bag comes with the saw, empties with a zipper, and can be switched for an included adapter to fit Festool standard 27mm/36mm Vac hose.
Festool's commitment to Battery operated cordless tools continues to grow - and with each additional tool the buying into the cordless line-up makes more sense. The ability to interchange batteries between the Carvex, Drills, Hammer Drill, Impact Driver, and now a Plunge Cut track saw makes Festool precision accessible - even when a power source isn't.
