- Duo vs. Dia vs. DuoPlus
- Grit Comparison
DMT DuoSharp bench stones have two interrupted diamond surfaces for sharpening wide tools like chisels, plane irons and knives. The polkadot pattern catches the dust created while sharpening - keeping the abrasive clear and quick cutting. The durable diamond surface won't dish, making DuoSharp Bench Stones great for use with sharpening jigs.
You don't need water or oil to sharpen with a DuoSharp, so they're an ideal sharpening solution for a garage workshop, or job-site where you don't have access to a sink, or don't want the mess of oil. The compact size and light weight of the stones makes them easy to travel with (Remember each stone is two grits!). A Coarse/Extra-Fine DuoSharp is the great single stone solution to sharpening tools on-site when you don't have the time to be fuss around.
10" by 4" stones have a luxuriously large surface covered in over 4 Carats of diamond abrasive for even the widest plane irons or knives. The large size makes the 10" stones a natural choice for use with sharpening jigs. The diamond surface measures 9 7/8" by 3 15/16"
8" by 2 5/8" stones are available with either the DuoBase or a non-skid mat. The DuoBase can be adjusted, so your 10" base can also be used with any 8" DuoSharp stone and vise versa. The diamond surface measures 8 1/16" by 2 5/8"
All DMT products are designed for a long service life. Stones can be cleaned with a polymer pencil eraser - or washed with dish soap. Store stones dry, (a simple wipe with a towel is fine) and leaf between stones with towel, cloth, paper, or plastic storage sleeves to prevent abrasive sides from rubbing.
DMT DuoSharp diamond bench stones are Made in the USA
DMT offers both interrupted and solid surface diamond sharpening products. Both have their advantages for different users but the choice is largely about personal preference and what type of tools you'll be sharpening on your DMT stones. All DMT stones can be used dry or with water, and are made in the USA to the same high standards.
Duosharp Stones are the classic patented DMT Polka-Dot Sharpening stones. Stones are two sided, and have an interrupted steel surface on both sides. The recessed dots keep abraded metal dust off the abrasive surface of the diamonds, for very fast sharpening. The dots will catch tools much smaller than 1/4" or anything with a curved surface like a gouge - but their compact construction, light weight, and two-grit configuration make them an excellent choice for many users.
DiaSharp stones have a solid un-interrupted diamond surface on one side of a solid steel backing. They can sharpen pointy and narrow tools, as well as wide irons and chisels. Solid steel construction makes these the heaviest DMT stones, but also the flattest. The extra heft keeps them firmly in place on a non-stick mat, but doesn't travel well - with the exception of the DiaSharp Credit Card sharpeners which fit in a wallet.
DuoSharp Plus stones add a 3/4" wide uninterrupted surface to the ends of what would otherwise be a classic 8" DuoSharp bench stone. The uninterrupted surface is for sharpening pointy, or narrow tools. Like the regular DuoSharp, these stones are light weight, and travel well. If you regularly sharpen chisels, knives and plane irons, but only occasionally need to sharpen tools narrower than 1/4" the DuoSharp is good option.
