We offered this very moderately priced kit of separate sharpening stones a few years ago and then somehow dropped the ball. A few weeks ago we discovered a cache of them in our warehouse and, well, here they are. The kit contains a large 800 grit coarse stone (8 1/8" x 2 5/8" x 1 1/4" ) for initial sharpening and a 6000 grit finishing stone (7 5/16" x 2 1/2" x 3/4" ). A Nagura stone for creating slurry on the finishing stone is included as is a rubber base that will firmly clamp either stone and keep it from skidding on a wet surface.

Having separate stones avoids contamination and makes sharpening go smoother. For kitchen knives I think this is a perfect combination. For woodworking many people prefer an 8000 grit finishing stone over a 6000, but you will get a good edge off of the 6000, especially if you let the stone dry out as you sharpen so that the sharpening slurry crushes and gets finer, and isn't washed away. Taking more time and letting the stone dry out is the traditional means of working a finishing stone for maximum effectiveness.

For detailed instructions on how to sharpen and hone see the exhibit in our museum at http://www.antiquetools.com/sharp.
