Occasionally the sockets on festool tools that are used to connect the power cord wear out. What happens is that unless there is a good connection between tool and cord the connection arcs, carbonizes, and slowly burns out. The way to prevent this is to ensure that every time you connect a cord you turn it completely 90°s so it it totally connected. The reality is that, especially when in the middle of a job, sometimes we don't turn it all the way. We see a lot of tools where the socket has been burned out. But the problem also effects the cords. If the plug end of a cord isn't connected totally, like the socket it will start arc and burn out. But it gets worse. When you then connect the burned cord to other tools, you won't be able, even by locking securely, to get a proper connection and then the connection on the new tool will start to arc and degrade.

The solution is simple. If the socket on your tool is black and burned out, replace it. And replace any cords that show arcing. The actual replacement takes five minutes. If you bring the tool to the shop we will do it for you at no charge (except for the new socket). You can also change the socket yourself pretty easily. We stock sockets for most of the Festool tools. Replacement cords are also listed on this page, the cord without the notch, for sanders and routers, can be used with all tools. The cord with the notch will only work on low amperage tools such as sanders.

Note: We almost only see this issue on tools that get very heavy use.
