Beading saws are straight-handled saws, sometimes called jeweler's saws when they come in short lengths with very fine teeth and straight-handled dovetail saws or gent's saws when they're longer. Our guess is that the name "beading saw" originated from when the saws were used to trim the strips of beading and other applied moldings that were so popular in the 19th century. We started woodworking using straight-handled gent's saws, but over the years, gent's saws got lighter and lighter and acquired a bit of a reputation as cheaper saws. It was all very disappointing. But Gramercy Tools new beading saws have features that we appreciated in the saws we remember, the features that made the saws great. First of all, the saws are hand set and hand sharpened. This human touch introduces a very desirable randomness to the spacing: the teeth are regular, but don't all fall into a set pattern, and the saw will jam less. This results in a great, smooth cut. This is why old vintage saws that have been hand sharpened for years are so prized. The saw has a heavy brass back that gives the tool a lot of weight and a commanding posture, and a short rosewood handle that tucks comfortably in the palm of your hand. Both these features make the saw much more comfortable to use and give you more control than you'd ever expect in a straight-handled saw.

The smaller (4" and 6") saws are available filed crosscut for trimming and other small work that makes them perfect for luthiers and model-makers. The 8" is available in either crosscut or rip pattern; the former makes a great trimming saw, the latter is designed for dovetailing and cutting the cheeks of small tenons. All the saws have approximately 1 3/4" maximum depth of cut, .021" blade thickness with a small amount of set. The pitch of the saw is kept at 15 ppt to cut fast (the 4" saw is at 19ppt).
