We carry many types of mortise chisels. Light duty sash mortise chisels are easy to handle and were originally used for chopping the relatively shallow mortises found in the mullions and muntins of a wooden window. If you consistently drill out the waste when mortising, these chisels will work well, even for deep mortises. However, they are of thinner section than heavy duty mortising chisels. Heavy duty sash mortise chisels are more popular in Continental Europe and are strong and work well. However, for strength and ease of use you cannot beat true English mortise chisels, which are just wonderful to use and a joy all around. We also stock Japanese mortise chisels which are great for those doing woodworking in the Japanese tradition.
