Projects On My To Do List
11/24/2009
Everyone has projects that they start but never finished. Hopefully the project gets done at some point. While cleaning out some junk on my bookshelf (to make room for more, different, better, junk) I ran across these carefully scaled section drawings of a chess set. It brought back some memories. The date on the envelope holding the drawings was 1972, a good thirty seven years ago, when I was fourteen.
My dim memories suggest that I drew the plans based on stuff I read in Whittling and Woodcarving by E. J. Tangerman (a book I have had since I was 12) probably in the heat of the chess craze of 1972 when Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky for the world chess championship. It was to be a traditional set of Staunton design in a fitted case. It never got built. As I recall at the time I didn't know where to get the ebony I wanted for the black pieces (I had the boxwood) and building a fitted case was certainly beyond my skill level. Then of course other projects appeared, the chess craze ended, and of course I discovered girls, going out, and other activities.
I am going to take a close look at these plans, It would be a fun project, but small enough to accomplish in a reasonable time. I happen to have a nice piece of ebony I can use. And I am pretty sure I can locate the boxwood I need.

Well, Joel... did you notice the 'Do Not Bend' warning?

Yes - and in the past 37 years it has been stored without bending.
