There is a wide variety of really fine waterstones on the market today, and each brand has unique characteristics that give it advantages in certain situations. These "Super Stones" from Japan are designed to allow you to sharpen very quickly, and with a minimum of stone maintenance. They also come in a 12000 grit grade for super fine finish stone. The stones are resin based, so they do not need to be, and should not be soaked before use. All they require is a splash of water. Unlike some of the other resin based stones on the market, they will stay flat for a reasonable amount of use, but are soft enough to be easily flattened by traditional means - sandpaper, flattening stones, or regular diamond stones. Another great advantage to these stones is that their abrasive is soft enough so that it shatters in use and give a very smooth sharpening gradient. With just 2 or 3 stones you can quickly progress from a dull edge to a super sharp one. The stones are about 3/8" (10mm) thick and are mounted on a solid plastic base. Even at 3/8" thick, these stones will last for years of average use. We think it's a great way to get a professional solution at a cost effective price. All stones are 8 1/4" x 2 3/4" x 3/8" (210 x 70 x 10mm) and mounted on a plastic base. Made in Japan.
