The Clifton multiplane is the king of combination planes. It is the last descendent of prized combination planes such as the Stanley 45, Stanley 55 and the Record 405. The multiplane was invented before the power router and can be configured to do basically all the jobs of all the various plow, rabbet, dado, fillister and other specialty planes combined. For hand tool people like us, having a complete multiplane makes it possible to do all those things that a router is used for - the things that cannot be done without a host of wooden or metal plow and combination planes.
Now that we've perhaps sold you on the concept of the multiplane, you might ask why you should consider getting a modern multiplane instead of the antiques we've mentioned. When we first started in the workshop, you could find complete Stanley 45's in good shape. Our own 45 needed a little work and new spurs, which took a little while to locate, but overall everything eventually worked out fine. These days it's much harder to get a complete plane in which all the parts are in good shape and up to specification. Nowadays a "complete" antique multiplane usually means a plane cobbled together from parts - parts that might or might not work well together. All the other modern plow and combination planes don't have half the functionality of the Clifton multiplane, so having a one stop shop is a great convenience. The Clifton multiplane also has a bunch of features that aren't found on simpler combination planes. For example, the micro-adjust on the fence is a great feature to have. You set the fence to about where it goes and then tune it in exactly and lock it in place. The whole tool has a certain Victorian mechanical complexity which lends itself to playing around, but once you get past the fact that to tool is loads of fun to play with you will be able to get lots and lots done with it.
The basic cutter set (shown )consists of 24 cutters which include 13 plough and dado blades, 1 wide fillister blade, 5 beading cutters, 2 tonguing cutters, 2 Ovolo cutters and one slitting cutter. And additional set of 16 cutters (not shown), is available separately and contains 2 sash cutters, 6 fluting cutters, and 8 reeding cutters.
Comes packed in a sturdy wooden box. Made in England.
