It comes as no surprise to hear that you shouldn't bang on the end of your tools with the palm of your hand. The hand isn't designed as a hammer, so in time you'll injure and destroy muscles in your palm, leading to all sorts of problems. Unfortunately, if you're not already in the habit of using a mallet, stopping your work to pick one up can seem awkward and unnatural, so there's is an ever-present temptation just to pound away - just this once! One solution to this problem is this shock pad. It fits either the right or left hand and is designed to leave your fingers free for normal carving.
