This is a facsimile of a guide published in 1850, which aimed to provide the "Rules and regulations in everything relating to the arts of painting, gilding, varnishing and glass staining." And the author wasn't kidding! There is a charming authorial tone ("It has been the compiler's aim, while he has rejected all that appeared foreign to the subject, to omit nothing of real utility; and he trusts he shall be found to have attained it.") as well as a very practical list of tests for the "diction of adulterations in oils, colours, &c." This is a fascinating book for social history buffs (there is a focus on "the diseases and accidents to which painters, gilders and varnishers are peculiarly liable"), and of course a must read for anyone interested in historical finishes. The book makes you want to add mastic, gum Benjamin, crystals of verdigris and two drachms of shell-lac to your woodshop.
