Hand Cut Rasps and Riffler Rasps by Auriou

We are very pleased to be to offer the largest range of Auriou rasps and riffler rasps available in the US.

Auriou rasps and riffler rasps have been hand-made in France since 1856. The point of hand-cutting these tools is that a skilled raspmaker (and it takes Auriou three years to train theirs) will cut teeth that are very regular, but always spaced a little "off," with each tooth cutting a slightly different path than its predecessor. This results in a tool that is both powerful but precise, with an incomparably smooth finish. Also, the teeth of a hand-cut rasp are cut to the very edge, which gives you the ability to work to a sharp corner. This means that the speed and smoothness of an Auriou will top even the best of the machine-made rasps (and those would be our excellent Nicholson #49 and #50 cabinetmaker's rasps, which perform very well and offer a great value in comparison to the Auriou). There are other companies making hand made rasps but Auriou is the only company still making a full range with incredible quality. The teeth are densely and evenly cut, because if any tooth is too high it would leave scratchs. The tools are elegantly formed, curved not just bent. They are works of art.

As you might have noticed, we're big advocates of having the right tool for the job. So is Auriou, which is why they offer such a wide range of rasps. Auriou uses a scale of 1 to 15 to describe the grain (the degree of fineness or coarseness) of their rasps, with 1 the coarsest and 15 the finest. For more information on Auriou rasps, rasp terminology, how they are made, used, cared for, and on why a hand-made rasp is such a wonderful tool Click here.

Note: Most of the Auriou rasps are handed. We stock both versions.

After a 2 year break we are pleased to announce that our first shipment of genuine Auriou rasps, made in France my Michel Auriou has arrived!!!

Note: The handles of all Auriou rasps are of French walnut. We will be updating the pictures we have soon.
